ALABAMA SCIENCE

TEACHING AND LEARNING CENTER

Outreach Programs

Current Programs:

Alabama Center for Research on OnLine Learning (acROLL): As institutions of higher education enter the online arena for delivery of instruction there is a need to evaluate and compare models of online learning environments. This research can lead to the identification of best practices that will inform the design of future online learning environments. Thus, there are pedagogical strategies and design techniques that can make all online environments more effective. The purpose of the Center is to identify the best practices for online learning and implement effective pedagogical strategies in online learning environments.

Earth System Science (ESS)-NOVA: The purpose of this program is to optimize online learning, a natural "next step" for distance education, and through research and development.   As part of this program, the University of Alabama, in conjunction with the University of Idaho, Kansas State University and Fayetteville State University, will deliver the NASA Classroom of the Future (COTF) Earth Systems Science online courses to educators throughout the State of Alabama and the Southeast.  ESS-NOVA is primarily funded from the NASA Earth Science Enterprise.

Completed Programs (but still with lots of useful information and links!):

Project Energy: The purpose of this program is to support, facilitate, and extend the efforts of organizations and agencies within the state of Alabama in the development of energy literacy through energy education. (Project Energy works directly with K-12 teachers creating exemplary energy education classrooms.) Project energy was funded by the U. S. Department of Energy Alabama DOE/EPSCoR Program.

NOVA: The purpose of this national university faculty development program is to create change in higher education to enhance science, mathematics, and technology literacy of preservice teachers. Nova is a program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

ALSTEP:  A program directed towards planning for the enhancement of grades K-8 science teaching in three West Alabama School Systems. The reforms are aligned with state and national standards through collaborative development of teachers' pedagogical expertise and content knowledge (supported by technology). ALSTEP is funded by the National Science Foundation.

NASA-STEP: A science and mathematics program for middle school and high school inservice science and mathematics teachers sponsored by Marshall Space Flight Center and administered jointly by the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama at Huntsville. NASA-Step is funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
